Writings on Michigamua

Michigamua is a secret society that started at the University of Michigan in 1901. The group has historically pretended to be an Indian tribe and engaged in a number of activities that are blatantly racist. The group also gets treatment by the administration of UM that is more favorable than most other student groups get. Specifically they get exclusice access to the 7 floor of the student union.

On February 6, the Students of Color Coalition (SCC) seized and occupied Michigamua's space. The SCC has asked both that UM change its treatment of Michigamua and that a broader set of issues connected to the quality of life of students of color be addressed.

The occupation ended on March 13. All Native American artifacts found in Michigamu's space have been removed although Michigamua retain's possession of the space. The administration has not even begun to consider the larger set of issues.

I have covered the events as a journalist and have produced these stories.
